G is for Gullah College Scholarship Program
G is for Gullah funds scholarships for Gullah Geechee high school students who have been admitted to college to study in the health professions. The health professions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Public Health
Nursing
Exercise Science
Psychology
Social Work
Biology and Microbiology
Biomedical Engineering
Chemistry
Scholarship recipients should have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to receive the initial $1,500. They are required to submit a photo along with a typewritten essay, 500 words minimum, about a Gullah Geechee person or event that’s an inspiration and the impact on their life. Recipients must remain in good academic standing to receive $1,000 each year of college.
Kumbaya: An Introduction to Gullah Geechee History and Culture through Storytelling
Taught by Dr. Ebony Allen Toussaint, students will explore the historical, social, and political importance of Gullah Geechee Culture in the American South through various works by Gullah Geechee artists and scholars. The aim of this course is to increase awareness about Gullah Geechee culture. Students will be able to describe who Gullah Geechee people are, their language, and the many ways they engage in storytelling. Students will examine educational and cultural preservation activities. Students will critically appraise different means of Gullah Geechee storytelling: song, art, literature, theater, and film. This course culminates with a trip to the annual Heritage Days celebration at the historic Penn Center (St. Helena Island, SC).
